Ken Baker of NewAge® Industries, Inc. (Southampton, PA), is involved with RFID technology for the tracking and identification of pharmaceutical processing equipment. As owner of a company that manufactures plastic and rubber tubing, Baker’s connection with RFID came about after his development of the AdvantaPure® high-purity products line in 2001. Created to target the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, food, and beverage industries, AdvantaPure continues to be Baker’s primary focus. The advantages of utilizing RFID technology for tracking and identification purposes in the pharmaceutical industry quickly became apparent after the establishment of the product line, and Baker pursued opportunities. He is a strong believer in the safety and cost savings aspects of RFID and is coauthor of three U.S. patents on RFID technology application involving AdvantaPure’s Hose Track and PET Process Equipment Tracking systems and GammaTag gamma-radiation-resistant RFID tags. Baker has over 20 years experience in the tubing and hose industry. His father, Raymond Baker, started NewAge® Industries in 1954, and Baker joined the company in 1985. He and his father also own majority interest in Colex International Limited, a tubing and hose manufacturer located in Leicestershire, U.K., which has helped both companies establish a worldwide presence. NewAge Industries won the Greater Philadelphia Family Business Award, organized by the University of Pennsylvania’s famed Wharton Business School, in 1998. Baker initiated an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) in 2006. Baker is a member of several local business organizations and an active member of the community. He invites area high school students to intern at NewAge Industries each summer as part of a mentoring program. As a Board of Directors member for the Montgomery County Community College Foundation (Blue Bell, PA), Baker is involved with fund raising for scholarships, grants, and campus cultural activities. | Dr. Daniel W. Engels is an Associate Professor in the UTA Department of Electrical Engineering and is the Director of the Texas Radio Frequency Innovation and Technology Center. The Texas Center is a multi-disciplinary, multi-university research initiative dedicated to bringing intelligence and communication capabilities to all objects by exploring the fundamental technologies of and the applications of radio frequency identification, wireless communication, and sensor network technologies and systems. The vision of the Texas Center is a world of interactive, socially responsible, and intelligent everyday objects and devices. The Center's primary research focuses on healthcare and security applications and social and policy issues exposed by the adoption of wireless communication technologies and intelligent objects. Dr. Engels is the former Research Director of the Auto-ID Labs of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Engels spearheaded the Auto-ID Labs‚ transition from the Auto-ID Center to the Auto-ID Labs and EPCglobal, Inc., a non-profit organization. He is one of the principle architects of the EPC System, a system designed to connect physical objects to the Internet, and the principle product from the Auto-ID Center. The EPC System was licensed to EPCglobal Inc. in 2003. The EPC System is currently being adopted and deployed by the retail industry and the U.S. Department of Defense. Dr. Engels was the first Chairman of the Hardware Action Group under EPCglobal, Inc. and was a member of EPCglobal's Technical Steering Committee (TSC) from its inception in 2003 until May 2005. The Hardware Action Group is the technical action group charged with developing the hardware standards, including radio frequency identification protocols, used within the EPC System. The TSC guides the work of all the technical action groups that develop EPCglobal's standards and recommends avenues of EPC System related research to the Auto-ID Labs. Prior to his appointment as Research Director of the MIT Auto-ID Labs, Dr. Engels was the Director of Protocols for its predecessor, the Auto-ID Center. The Auto-ID Center, founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in October 1999, developed the EPC System and its related standards. As Director of Protocols, Dr. Engels led the development of two radio frequency identification (RFID) protocols, and he led the daily operational and research activities at the MIT Auto-ID Center. Dr. Engels is one of the original members of the team that formed in 1998 to develop what became known as the EPC System. Dr. Engels has authored more than 50 articles published in peer reviewed conferences and journals. His work includes seminal publications on the Reader Collision Problem, as well as articles on antenna design, the EPC System, VLSI computer aided design, theoretical complexity of scheduling problems, and programming languages. Dr. Engels‚ broad research interests span the areas of radio frequency communications, sensor technologies, information systems, scheduling theory and applications, optimization algorithms, complexity theory, and the social and policy implications of technologies. He is applying concepts from these areas to solve problems in embedded systems, mobile computing, electronic commerce, and applications of advanced and emerging technologies for security and in healthcare. | Dr. Fonger is a practicing Cardiothoracic Surgeon who did medical school and general surgery training in Canada before moving permanently to the United States. He completed his Cardiothoracic Surgical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and has held faculty positions first at Boston University and then back at Johns Hopkins Hospital before going into private practice in Washington DC and with the Cardiac Surgical Group at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He now works in Atlanta GA and focuses on the spectrum of emerging minimally invasive techniques in cardiac surgery. Throughout his training and years of practice Dr. Fonger has had a continued interest in the innovation of medical devices and surgical techniques. He holds several US and foreign patents and lectures internationally on recent advances in cardiothoracic surgery. | Dr. Maisel is Director of the Medical Device Safety Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, both in Boston, MA where he has an active cardiology practice. Dr. Maisel received his undergraduate degree from MIT, his medical degree from Cornell Medical College, and a Masters in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Mr. Pappas, a serial entrepreneur, has been involved with RFID since 1999 using active tags in closed end loop applications for the food, pharma, and transportation industries. In 2001 he began working with passive tag technologies again in closed end loop projects for manufacturing, warehousing, legal and healthcare. He saw the use of RFID technologies in many industries outside of the realm of supply chain. He realized that RFID can complement the use of bar coding in many applications from amusement parks to quality control in a pharma research labs. He and his associates have a number of patent pending, RFID applications with the US patent office. Harry has spent the last five years in the RFID space working with Active as well as Passive RFID technologies in a number of industries in a “hands-on” capacity. |

| Stephane started with RFID in 1993 and works since 2005 as an independent RFID consultant working for several Governments and multi-national companies. Previously he was working for several leading RFID companies such as Philips Semiconductors, Kudelski, Sokymat, Global ID and Seeburger. His business experience brought him to the position of knowing RFID from all necessary components such as the chip, the transponder and card, the middleware and data management up to the complete RFID solution and processes.
Since September 2006, Stephane is mandated by GS1 EPCglobal, the major worldwide standardization body in RFID and barcode, as their "European Director EPC/RFID". His main tasks are the overall coordination and business development of EPC/RFID in Europe and the support of 44 GS1 national organisations, lobbying activities to governments and public bodies, representation at public events, project management of several programmes. Stephane was speaking at more than 50 major RFID shows around the world and is also member of the OSEC pool of experts mandated by the Swiss State Secretary of Economical Affairs (seco). | Dr. Elliot B. Sloane is a clinical engineer, information scientist, and works as an information systems faculty member at Villanova University since 2000. He teaches healthcare informatics, database management, e-commerce, and telecommunications. Dr. Sloane’s research and publications are in the medical informatics area, including medical decision support systems, wireless medical device networks simulation and validation, and healthcare information system security and reliability. He was the founder and has been the faculty advisor for Villanova’s national Business Ethics case competition team since its inception in 2004 Dr. Sloane worked 15 years at the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI), where, he was VP of laboratory operations, responsible for medical device evaluations, accident investigations, and all information systems. As a vice president for MEDIQ/PRN Life Support Services for 10 years, he was responsible for nationwide medical equipment service, support, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance. Dr. Sloane has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization since 1984. He is a frequent international guest clinical engineering and healthcare information technology faculty member for government agency training programs in regions including Australia, Latin America, the Caribbean, both Western and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. A participant and presenter in numerous international clinical engineering and information technology conferences, including AAMI, AMCIS, HIMSS, and IEEE EMBS, Dr. Sloane serves on an NIH SBIR grant review committee for elder-care technologies, and he advises the Ben Franklin Technology Partnership on Pennsylvania’s regional business investments for biomedical technology companies. He has had an active role in the information systems industry, and served two separate times as president of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP/DPMA - Montgomery County, PA Chapter). Dr. Sloane is also a past president of the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE), founded the ACCE Patient Safety/Medical Errors taskforce, the joint ACCE/HIMSS IHE Patient Care Device Domain Task Force, and the ACCE Healthcare Technology Foundation. Dr. Sloane is a Senior Member of IEEE, is on the Board of the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, chairs the IEEE Membership Development Task Force for the Healthcare industry segment, and is the IEEE EMB Board representative to the IEEE Systems Council and the IEEE RFID Technical Committee. He is also a very active HIMSS leader, and chairs the Privacy and Security Steering Committee, co-chairs the IHE International Board of Directors as the HIMSS delegate, and has twice been elected to represent IHE on the Board of the ANSI Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel. Emily Sopensky is passionate about the importance of providing clear, objective guidance about radio frequency, RFID and the changes we should expect with pervasive implementation of the RFID technology. Ms. Sopensky’s involvement with RFID began in 1996 with Texas Instruments, where she was a consultant for six years with their RFID group. Very much involved with IEEE and many engineers in supporting recognizing the emerging technology of RFID, Ms. Sopensky chaired the 2007 and 2008 IEEE technical conferences (www.ieee-rfid.org <http://www.ieee-rfid.org/> ) on RFID and is involved in organizing the 2009 conference. In addition, she recently led the IEEE-USA team that wrote a white paper on RFID (now available from IEEE-USA) as well as a position statement on the subject. Representing IEEE-USA, she engages the U.S. Senate RFID Caucus formed in July 2006.. A business consultant by trade, Ms. Sopensky is also the sole proprietor of The Iris Company, a communications firm helping organizations enter new markets and develop their strategic marketing programs. |

| Craig Weakley is Technical Director for RCD Technology Inc, responsible for new product development. RCD Technology Inc is a manufacturer of passive HF and UHF RFID inlays, labels, and wristbands. These products are primarily focused on closed loop RFID applications which require, application specific solutions. Prior to RCD Technology Inc, he worked for Avery Dennison’s RFID Division to develop the manufacturing processes, materials, and quality test systems to assemble RFID inlays and labels. Mr. Weakley has more than 24 years of engineering and management experience. He has held various senior engineering and management positions at e-star, Deskin Research Group, and Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. Craig has eleven published patents which include eight radio frequency identification patents; one for “Signal Processing technique for an Object Detection System” and three for “Multiple Beam Antenna system for simultaneously receiving multiple satellite signals”. Mr. Weakley earned a B.S. in Electronic Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and is a 23 year member of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. |
